Sutrah: Muslim Focus & Azan for iPhone (iOS 17 or later).

Getting started

Locking apps at prayer times
  1. Open the Focus tab and tap Choose apps and categories. Pick the apps that distract you and tap Done.
  2. Turn on Hold apps at each adhan and pick 10, 20 or 30 minutes.
  3. Make sure a city is set (Prayer tab). That is it: at each adhan, iOS shows the Sutrah shield over those apps.
Opening a held app early

On the shield, tap Open Sutrah. Choose Read Quran (the ring fills as you read) or Dhikr (tap to 100). Tap Done and the app opens for the time you set under Focus → "…and it opens for". Free accounts get one unlock a day; Pro is unlimited. Strict-mode sessions cannot be opened early.

Deep-focus sessions and strict mode

Focus tab → pick 15 to 120 minutes → Start. With Strict mode on, there is no early end and no Quran unlock until the timer runs out; use it only when you mean it. Without strict mode, the Today screen shows End session.

Screen Time permission

Why does Sutrah ask for Screen Time access?

Apple's Screen Time (Family Controls) is the only way an app can hold other apps. Sutrah uses it in "individual" mode for your own device. Sutrah never sees your usage; Apple applies the shield. See the privacy policy.

The shield does not appear
  1. Settings → Screen Time → Apps with Screen Time Access: Sutrah must be on.
  2. Open Sutrah once after a restart so it can re-apply today's schedule.
  3. Check the Prayer tab shows times for your city; without a location there is no prayer window.
  4. Locks apply only to the apps you picked. System apps such as Phone and Messages are never held.
I am stuck behind a shield

Tap Open Sutrah on the shield and complete a Quran or dhikr unlock. If you cannot open Sutrah at all, remove Sutrah's access under Settings → Screen Time → Apps with Screen Time Access; all shields drop immediately.

Prayer times and adhan

Times look wrong for my city

More → Prayer times & adhan: pick the calculation method your local mosque uses (ISNA, Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura, Egyptian, Karachi, Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar, Singapore, Diyanet, Moonsighting Committee, Tehran/Jafari), switch Asr to Hanafi if needed, and adjust individual prayers by a few minutes. You can also type coordinates instead of using location.

No adhan notification

Settings → Notifications → Sutrah: allow notifications and sounds. Focus modes and Do Not Disturb can silence them; add Sutrah as an allowed app in your Focus settings. Sutrah schedules seven days of notifications at a time; opening the app refreshes them.

Qibla compass points the wrong way

Hold the phone flat, away from magnets and cases with magnets, and move it in a figure-eight to calibrate. The compass needs location permission for your city.

Quran

Changing translation, font size or night mode

More → Quran reading, or tap the AA button in the reader. Eight translations are included with attribution. The whole Quran is stored inside the app; no internet is needed.

Sutrah Pro, billing and refunds

What is free and what is Pro?

Free, forever: one held app, one prayer-time lock, one Quran or dhikr unlock a day, full prayer times, the whole Quran, tasbih, qibla and stats. Pro: unlimited apps and locks, Live Activity countdown, widgets, accountability partner, strict and Ramadan modes, every translation and calculation method.
